Applications to meet User Expectations
We all know user expectations are increasing. Blame the ability to immediately access non-business applications (Facebook etc.) anywhere anytime if you will but the ‘consumerisation of IT’ is adding to the pressure of the IT Manager. User expectation is that IT is behind the times if they can’t deliver applications that offer that same experience as a Smartphone app – i.e. apps that download in seconds regardless of where they are and what they are downloading to.
Performance is expected however businesses are increasingly realising that applications which work well in their LANs may well perform badly in other network environments e.g.
- The Wide Area Network
- New consolidated data centres (hosted or not) where corporate offices now access servers over the WAN
- Mobile
- The internet i.e. cloud or applications delivered as Software as a Service
The complexity of the environment means it is increasingly difficult to isolate where a performance issue might be. In order to deliver applications that perform you need to be able to answer the question, “What are the characteristics bandwidth, latency, packet loss etc of our own network so we can create a realistic emulated application environment?
We’re currently working with a customer to profile the existing network and create emulation “scenarios” investigating traffic flows and response times. The latter is being can be used for troubleshooting a specific issue but will also serve to improve and capacity planning in the future.
Customers seeking to understand the performance issues in their network – either for todays problems or for capacity planning for tomorrow’s network should contact us to ask to speak to our Consultants.
